Hawaii Late Season Update

Hey everybody and welcome to a spiffy new year; 2010. Man, Anyone visting the north shore right now is S-T-O-K-E-D! it is so awesome round here on the north shore at the moment. It’s like everybody pissed off home for Christmas this year. The locals have been loving the uncrowded lineups, not to mention constant swell. It’ll get busy here again soon enough though. The Backdoor shoot-out is set to go this week, followed by the Volcom Pipeline Pro (That has a good sound to it, don’t you think :) and we have another Eddie Size swell in the rumor mix as well, so it’s bound to be exciting times here this coming week.

It’s been a relatively mellow time here with very few pro surfers even noticed around the place. I noticed a crew digging the river at waimea on Boxing day, so I cruised down there with Jamie Obrien and it was amazing. So chaotic yet hilarious. Amazing to watch. The last day of the year saw a decent Pipe swell and the standout of the day was veteran Brasilian surfer; Fabio Gouvei, who was doing full face carves, the likes of which is usually reserved for Tommy Carroll. The boogers are definitely starting to show in numbers as they usually do at this time of the year and some of them have been scoring because it’s been so quiet here. There’s been a steady contingent of Brasilians hanging out down at Rocky de Janeiro and some of these guys are just outrageous. I haven’t got a clue who some of them are, but man, there’s some amazing shit going on that we don’t hear about. Same with the Euro’s too. Quite a few of them occupying the lineups, but there’s a couple that are just flaring that hard. Don’t blame really, it’s tropical warm and pumping! yew!
