Stern Rises Flat to 20 ft

Under grey gloomy skies on Monday morning the swell on the south coast of Tasmania was relatively small. Standing at Cremorne we were in a little bit of a daze looking at the tiny conditions. However by 930 sitting at Pollys house we started to hear some rumblings from the beach.
Soon enough we jumped onbaord our boat and speed down to Shippies from 35ks away from our port. The swell in the bay was junky and setty and the wind was a bit funny. However as we rounded the Bluff at Shipstern everything fell into place. The winds dropped right out the swell was cleaning up and the sun started to flow its radiant rays our way.
Dirty black beasts soon morphed into sheer wild things of beauty beaming blue and green at us. All the tassie boys were onto it, from Jim Hollmer to Brook Philiips and Benny Richo, everyone went hard. Mainland surfers Ryan Hippo, Karl Atkins and Richie Vass made the journey down. The swell will go down as possibly the biggest ever, with some waves reaching in excess of 20 feet. Nomadic Pom, James Hick got one of the most craziest waves ever seen out there and pretty much was happy for the rest of the day.
The swell was directly from the SW @ 24 foot, and the 15 second swell period made for some of the thickest waves ever ridden at Shippies. Between 2 and 4 pm the swell died off because of the low tide, but after the tide started to come back in we got the traditional arvo pulse.
Overall a day that will be remembered forever and will go down in the history books as possibly the biggest Shippies swell of all time

Respect to the Tasmania crew! At the sametime you guys were ripping these moving mountains .The UK/Ireland was receivnig one of the largest swells in years over here, but for all the sessions that went down over here nonthing matches what you guys dealt with, sick!
No.24 is exceedingly ugly. Awsome vid, Footage taken from the top shelf!
How come on Magicseaweed where the link for this site is it says james hick got wave of the session yet the video doesn’t show any of his waves let alone wave of the day?
hi matt, jimmy did get two possibly biggest waves of the day, and rode them really well. we didnt put them in the video or the stills on the site,
because we have to save some images for the magazines and possible ads, otherwise we owuld be killing jimmys chances of a run for his sponsors etc.
they will appear in time and im sure you will see them in wavelength magazine very soon.
cheers stu
